Because the price is set by each practice and depends on how complex your case is, the useful questions are what drives the fee, what is included, and how a health fund rebate or payment plan might change what you actually pay.

What did CHOICE find about aligner and braces prices?

Option Price reported by CHOICE Notes
Invisalign (through an Invisalign-trained practitioner) Not advertised Invisalign told CHOICE costs are similar to traditional braces and to ask a provider for exact figures
Traditional metal braces About $5,000 to $9,000 For a standard 18-month treatment plan

Why does the price vary so much between patients?

Clear aligners are custom-made trays changed about every two weeks, according to Cleveland Clinic, and treatment length depends on the problem. Slight crookedness may take up to nine months, while more complex cases take several months more. More trays, more visits and more planning generally mean a higher fee. Other factors to ask about:

  • Case complexity. Cleveland Clinic notes aligners suit crowded or crooked teeth and some mild to moderate bite problems. Complex bites may need longer treatment or a different approach.
  • Attachments and refinements. The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO), quoted by CHOICE, explains some teeth need small attachments for aligners to move them properly.
  • Diagnostic records. X-rays and an examination are part of proper planning. The ASO warns that without them, problems like gum disease, bone loss or decay can be missed.
  • Retainers. Ask whether retainers after treatment are included in the quote or charged separately.

Is a cheaper at-home kit a false economy?

Sometimes. The ASO told CHOICE that a specialist can offer quicker, more limited treatment for roughly the same cost as an at-home kit. The Australian Dental Association warned that improperly done treatment can cause permanent damage to teeth, gums, jaw or jaw joints, and recommended a face-to-face consultation before starting. Remedial treatment to fix a poor result would add to the overall cost.

Will health insurance help with Invisalign costs?

Orthodontic benefits depend entirely on your fund and policy. As a reference point, CHOICE’s dental fees article reported an average benefit of $1,096 for braces (item 881, upper and lower with retainer) for singles, based on February 2023 data. That figure is for braces, not specifically aligners. CHOICE recommends checking annual and lifetime limits, and whether treatment must be pre-approved, before relying on a policy. Which questions should you ask for an accurate quote?

  1. Is the fee a single total, and what exactly does it cover (records, trays, attachments, refinements, retainers, reviews)?
  2. How long do you estimate treatment will take for my teeth?
  3. Who will supervise treatment: a general dentist or a specialist orthodontist?
  4. What happens to the cost if extra trays are needed?
  5. Which item numbers will be claimed with my health fund?
