How it works

  1. Enter the number of implantsType the figure from your quote into “Number of implants”. If your quote already shows totals for each item rather than prices per implant, tick “The amounts on my quote are already totals”.
  2. Copy the items from your quoteUnder “Amounts from your quote”, fill in the lines you see, such as “Consultation, examination and scans (e.g. CBCT)”, “Implant including placement (surgery)”, “Abutment” and “Crown on the implant”. Leave blank anything your quote does not list.
  3. Add your rebate and a reserveIf your health fund has confirmed a benefit, enter it in “Amount your dental plan or insurer pays (optional)” or as a percentage in “Insurance refund in % (optional)”. Use “Contingency reserve in % (optional)” for a buffer of your own choice.
  4. CalculateClick “Calculate costs”. You see a breakdown of your quote, your own share after the rebate and a budget including your reserve. Run it again with a second quote to compare.

What makes up the dental implants cost in Australia

A dental implant is a metal screw, usually made of titanium, that replaces the root of a missing tooth. Your dental professional attaches an artificial tooth to it. Healthdirect notes that more than one appointment is needed to prepare and fit an implant. That is why the dental implants cost in Australia is rarely one single figure. A quote usually lists several stages: the consultation and scans, the surgery to place the implant, the connecting part called the abutment, and the crown on top. Some plans also include extractions, bone grafting, a temporary tooth or sedation.

This calculator does not use average prices. Healthdirect explains that there are no standard fees for dentists in Australia, as there are for doctors, and that each clinic sets its own fees. Instead, you type in the amounts from your own written quote. The tool adds them up, shows which items make up the biggest share and works out your own share after any rebate. That makes it easier to compare two quotes line by line, rather than two headline totals that may include different things.

Medicare, health funds and help with implant costs

Healthdirect says the Australian Government does not generally cover the costs of dental services, so you will usually pay for implants yourself. If you have private health insurance with extras cover, your fund may pay part of the cost. Implants usually count as 'major dental', and funds use different terms, benefit levels and yearly limits. According to privatehealth.gov.au, waiting periods for extras are set by each insurer and can be 12 months or more for major items. Ask your fund for the benefit in writing, quoting the item numbers on your treatment plan.

Some people have other options. Healthdirect notes that holders of a Veteran's Gold or White Card may be able to claim the cost of dental implants. Adults with a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card can use public dental services, although the services offered and the waiting times differ between states and territories. Before you agree to treatment, healthdirect suggests asking what each procedure costs, asking for the item numbers and comparing a few practices.

  • Ask for a written, itemised quote with item numbers after an examination
  • Check whether scans, the abutment, the final crown and reviews are included
  • Ask your health fund what it pays for each item number and whether a waiting period applies

Comparing an Australian quote with a quote from Turkey

Many readers of this site are weighing up treatment at home against treatment in Turkey. You can run this calculator once for each quote. Make sure both include the same stages. Implant treatment happens in steps, and healthdirect says it takes about three months for the bone to grow around the implant. A plan abroad may therefore need more than one trip, and flights and accommodation are not part of a dental quote. Our Turkey teeth calculator adds those travel costs for you.

Smartraveller advises talking to your doctor in Australia about your plans before you travel for treatment, and it notes that Medicare does not cover you overseas. The Australian Dental Association's policy is that elective dental treatment should be done in Australia, partly because follow-up visits and records can be hard to access. Whatever you are considering, ask your dentist which questions matter for your own mouth before you compare prices.

Frequently asked questions

How much do dental implants cost in Australia?

There is no fixed price. Healthdirect says there are no standard fees for dentists in Australia and each clinic sets its own fees, so costs depend on the practice and your treatment plan. The most reliable figure is a written, itemised quote after an examination. Enter its lines in this calculator to see the total, your own share after any rebate and a budget with a reserve.

Does Medicare cover dental implants?

Generally not. Healthdirect says most dental care is not covered by Medicare and you will need to pay most dental costs yourself. Holders of a Veteran's Gold or White Card may be able to claim implant costs. If you are unsure what applies to you, ask your dentist and check with the relevant agency before treatment.

Does private health insurance cover tooth implants?

It depends on your policy. Implants usually fall under major dental in extras cover. Funds pay part of the cost, use different benefit levels and often have yearly limits. Waiting periods for major items can be 12 months or more. Ask your fund what it pays for each item number on your quote, then enter that amount in the calculator.

What is included in a tooth implant quote?

A quote may include the consultation and scans, extractions, bone grafting or a sinus lift, the implant and its placement, the abutment, the crown, a temporary tooth and sedation. Not every plan needs every item. That is why the calculator has a separate field for each line, and you leave blank whatever your quote does not list.

Why do two implant quotes look so different?

Quotes often include different things. One may include scans, a temporary tooth and reviews, while another lists only the implant and crown. Some show a price per implant, others a total. Enter both quotes separately, item by item, and tick “The amounts on my quote are already totals” where needed, so you compare like with like.

How long does dental implant treatment take?

Healthdirect says more than one appointment is needed to prepare and fit an implant, and it takes about three months for the bone to grow around it. Your own timeline depends on your treatment plan, for example whether extractions or bone grafting are needed first. Ask your dentist how many visits your plan involves.

What are the alternatives to a dental implant?

Healthdirect lists removable dentures and a dental bridge attached to the neighbouring teeth as alternatives. Each option has benefits and drawbacks, and they are priced differently. Ask your dental professional which options suit your situation, and ask for a written quote for each so you can compare them in the calculator.

What is the contingency reserve for?

Treatment plans can change, for example if extra scans, another review or a further temporary tooth is needed. The field “Contingency reserve in % (optional)” lets you add a buffer of your own choice on top of your share. It is not a prediction of extra costs. Ask your dentist which items might be added and how they would be charged.

Should I get implants in Turkey or Australia?

That is a personal decision, and this site cannot make it for you. Smartraveller suggests talking to your doctor in Australia before travelling for treatment and checking your insurance, because Medicare does not cover you overseas. Compare full quotes, aftercare and the number of trips. Our calculators help with the numbers, not with the clinical choice.
